Miracle winning streak broken, 4-1
TAMPA – The Tampa Yankees broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the eighth inning to snap the six-game wining streak of the Fort Myers Miracle 4-1 Monday night.
The Miracle (26-19), who started the day in a first-place tie with St. Lucie, retained their share for the division lead since the Mets also lost to the Daytona Cubs 8-3.
Yankees designated-hitter Kevin Mahoney dealt the big blow with a leadoff solo home run to right against Miracle reliever Brad Tippett. The next three hitters followed with consecutive extra-base hits to put to Yankees ahead 4-1. Tippett (0-1), making his sixth appearance of the season, took the loss.
Tampa scored the first run in the seventh against Miracle reliever Blake Martin. With two runners on, Walter Ibarra lined an RBI base hit to right.
The Miracle got the run back in the eighth when Brian Dozier, who doubled with one out, scored on Nick Romero’s RBI single.
Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen had his best outing of the year, limiting the Yankees to four hits in 5 2/3 innings for the no-decision.
The Miracle and Yankees meet again at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
