Miracle routed by Yanks, 12-1
TAMPA – The Tampa Yankees came out swinging Wednesday morning, scoring 12 runs before noon, and cruised a 12-1 victory over the first-place Fort Myers Miracle at George Steinbrenner Field.
The teams split the four-game series 2-2, and the Miracle (27-20) head home to Hammond Stadium with a half-game lead over the Mets in the Florida State League South Division. St. Lucie, which has lost nine of its last 10, finish their four-game series with Daytona Wednesday night with a chance to pull into a tie with the Miracle.
The Yankees roughed up Miracle starter Kane Holbrooks from the very first batter, pounding out five consecutive hits to start the game. After scoring three runs in the first, Tampa added three in the third with two outs. Holbrooks did not survive the fourth, giving up two more runs and loading the bases with one out.
Miracle reliever Shooter Hunt was summoned from the bullpen. On the second pitch, Deangelo Mack blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to put the Yankees ahead 12-0.
Holbrooks (2-7) was charged with 11 earned runs on 14 hits in just 3 1/3 innings pitched. Both the hits and runs allowed are new highs for a Miracle starter this season.
Yankees starter Jairo Heredia (3-1) put together his best start of the season, allowing no runs on four hits in six innings for the win. He struck out five and walked just one.
The Miracle’s lone run of the game came in the seventh inning. Anderson Hidalgo doubled with two outs off Tampa reliever Ronny Marte, and scored in Steve Liddle’s RBI single.
The Miracle bullpen kept the Yankees at bay the rest of the game, allowing just three hits in the final four innings. Hunt lasted 2 2/3 innings, and Jhon Garcia struck out four in two scoreless frames.
The Miracle host the Clearwater Threshers for a four-game series beginning Thursday. They will honor local branches of active duty service members and retired military with special discounts throughout the series.
