Red outshines Gold, 10-5
On a warm Wednesday evening, 50 of the best high school seniors from Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties gathered at City of Palms Park for the Bartley’s Sporting Goods Senior All-Star Baseball Classic.
Players were divided into Red and Gold squads, with some players from the same high school teams having to face each other on opposite teams in the Classic. The Gold Team was coached by Estero coach Frank Turco, while the Red Team was coached by newly crowned Class 3A state champion Tom LoSauro of Bishop Verot. LoSauro continued the winning streak as his Red Team won the game 10-5.
LoSauro had four of the five Vikings seniors on the Red Team, including the duo that guided his state championship team – first baseman Dan Vogelbach and designated hitter Hudson Boyd.
The teammates, who both signed to play at the University of Florida, both may be drafted in the first round of next month’s Major League free agent draft.
While Vogelbach was held in check Wednesday, going 0-for-2 with a walk, Boyd got things going in the second inning with a powerful drive of the right field wall for a double.
Two batters later, Boyd crossed the plate when Island Coast’s Taylor Renegar singled. The second proved to be the deciding inning in the game. The Red Team scored eight of its 10 runs in the inning.
Gold Team pitcher Toby Demarest of Cypress Lake was hit by a line drive by the first batter of the inning, and struggled with command the rest of the inning.
Pitching was strong early on for the Red Team as Barron Collier’s Drew Jackson started the game with three strikeouts in the first two innings, only allowing one hit.
Mariner pitcher Justin Gubelman picked up where Jackson left off, hitting 90 mph with his fastball, and only needing 14 total pitches in two innings of relief. Gubelman allowed one hit in the fourth inning, but it was erased by Tritons shortstop Ryan Hutson, who turned a nifty double play to end the inning.
Palmetto Ridge’s A.J. Davis sneaked across the first run for the Gold Team in the fifth inning. After drawing a walk, moving to second base on a passed ball, then stealing third Davis scored when a pickoff attempt ended up in left field.
The Red Team responded in the bottom of the fifth, again the charge being led by Boyd and Renegar. After drawing a walk and advancing to second on a passed ball, Boyd scored on a hit by Vikings second baseman Zach Haefeli. Haefeli was driven home by Renegar, giving the Red Team their 10th and final run.
Naples infielder Dan Moscato and Mariner’s Kevin Cavanagh crossed the plate in the sixth after a single by Cypress Lake’s Kurtis Goodison.
The Gold Team tacked on its final two runs in the seventh on a deep two-run home run by Moscato.
Ten players represented schools from Cape Coral in the Classic, with Cavanagh, Hutson, Gubelman, third baseman Alex Santana and outfielder Walter Cleary representing Mariner. Renegar and Jordan Moody represented Island Coast, infielders Koji Spangler and Brad Kopale from Cape Coral High, and outfielder Corey Jackson from North Fort Myers.
