Miracle earn split with Threshers

The Fort Myers Miracle split a doubleheader with the Clearwater Threshers on a sun-splashed Sunday at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle took the first game 2-0, but fell 1-0 in game two.

Coupled with the St. Lucie Mets losing Sunday to Dunedin, the Miracle (28-23) finish their short homestand tied for first place in the Florida State League South Division standings with the Mets.

Miracle starter Brad Stillings was excellent in the first game tossing four shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Stillings recorded eight ground ball outs and struck out two of the 12 Threshers retired.

Scoreless entering the bottom of the third, the Miracle took a 2-0 lead with an impressive at-bat by shortstop Brian Dozier. After Jhon Goncalves reached on a walk and James Beresford singled through the left side, Dozier stepped up to face Thresher starter Brody Colvin with one out.

Dozier tomahawked a curveball down the left field line to score two runs and put the Miracle on top 2-0.

Andrew Albers (3-1) took over for Stillings in the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Colvin (0-2) was the losing pitcher. Albers and Stillings combined for the first shut out of the 2011 season for the Miracle. The two hurlers induced 15 ground ball outs in seven innings and limited Clearwater to just three hits.

The second game produced another pitchers’ duel with Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen going toe-to-toe with Thresher right hander Julio Rodriguez. Stuifbergen held Clearwater scoreless through six innings until the Threshers broke through in the sixth.

Jiwan James led off with a bunt single and then was sacrificed to second base by Fidel Hernandez. With a runner in scoring position, 19-year-old Jonathan Singleton smashed a 1-1 pitch for a double to right to drive in James.

The Threshers (32-19) went to closer Justin Friend after a superb performance by Rodriguez, who tossed five scoreless allowing just one hit and striking out six. Friend shut the door on the Miracle by setting down six straight in the sixth and seventh innings.

The only Miracle hit came off the bat of Steve Liddle, a leadoff base hit in the third.

Rodriguez improved to 6-3 and Stuifbergen fell to 0-4 despite pitching a complete game and allowing only one run.

The Miracle head to Lakeland to begin a four-game series in Lakeland with the Flying Tigers (25-25) after an off day on Monday.
