Librarian Rhonda Gamboa said the teams consisted of four students who were asked 15 questions about the information found in the 15 Sunshine Young Readers Award titles. “For the last six weeks the children studied under the supervision of coaches, both parent volunteers and teachers, in preparation for the competition,” she said. Gamboa said she was extremely pleased with the event because the Sunshine Young Readers Award reading incentive program introduced students in 3rd to 5th grade with a variety of genres. The champion team, “The Bookworms”, included students Laney Bloch, Mackenzie Crawford, Megan Hanley and Anna Marie Parisi. The coach was Nancy Singleton. The other teams who participated included “B.O.B. Kids” with students Jayden Bendezu, Kelly Bevan, Tessa Santagate and Deja Vega; “The Super Students Yearning to Read Always” with students Jordan Joseph, Ashlyn Klump, Joseph Vazquez and Valeria Velazquez and the “Sunshine Reading Sisters” with students Alyssa Childs, Mary Grace Epps, Catherine Fonseca and Alyssa Grabner.
