Threshers defeat Fort Myers, 7-2, in extra innings

Five runs by the Clearwater Thrashers in the ninth inning propelled them to a 7-2 win over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium Saturday night.

Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, the second game was postponed by wet grounds. The final two games of the series will be played as two seven inning contests beginning at 12:05 p.m. Sunday. Fans with tickets from Saturday’s game may redeem them for a future Miracle game.

The Miracle (27-22) remain one-half game behind the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League South Division standings.

The Threshers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Miracle starter Logan Darnell. Leadoff man Jiwan James doubled into center field. After a groundout by Leandro Castro moved James to third, Sebastian Valle singled into left field for a RBI.

The Miracle responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs by Danny Rams and Reggie Williams off Clearwater starter Trevor May. Rams’ fourth homer of the season came on a 3-1 fastball and cleared the right field wall. Williams (2-for-4) tallied his third four-bagger with the Miracle on a laser off an 0-2 delivery.

Clearwater tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning. Castro singled off Darnell to start the inning. After getting Darin Ruff to fly out, Darnell allowed a RBI double to Valle.

Into extra innings, the Threshers sealed a the victory with a five-run top of the ninth, spearheaded by shortstop Troy Hanzawa’s three-run triple off Bruce Pugh. Pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief prior to the ninth, Pugh gave up five hits, including Hanzawa’s triple and a solo homer to Jonathan Singleton.

Threshers reliever Ebelin Lugo (2-1) picked up the win and Pugh (2-3) took the loss. Darnell lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
