A brush fire in northwest Cape Coral continues to burn today as local and state fire crews work to fully contain it.
The 320-acre fire is located west of Burnt Store Road, just south of the Charlotte County line. The fire was about 85 percent contained as of noon. Crews had hoped to have it fully contained today, but the fire broke out at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and again at 10 p.m.
“That basically means the fire jumps the line and starts running again,” Mike Weston, senior forester with the Florida Division of Forestry, said.
“It’s been real squirrely as far as jumping our line,” he added.
The fire is more than two miles long, but only a few hundred feet wide. Weston said most of the jumping has been along the far eastern side of the fire, so there are no residences or structures in any immediate danger.
“The houses are like a mile away,” he said, adding that the fire would “really have to whip around and jump the line” to put those homes in jeopardy.
With humidity still at a low, fire crews are keeping an eye on the wind. Weston said the winds are not quite as strong as they were Tuesday, but a more northeasterly current could become a concern for fire containment.
