FGCU seniors drafted in 33rd round

By Staff | Jun 9, 2011

On the third day of the Major League Amateur Player Draft, two Florida Gulf Coast senior baseball players were drafted in the 33rd round Wednesday.

Senior right-hander Jack Wagoner and senior shortstop Stephen Wickens became the third and fourth Eagles players selected in the last two days. Wagoner was drafted by the Cleveland Indians with pick 998, while Wickens was taken by the Minnesota Twins with the 1,018th choice.

The Eagles pair marks the 10th time in this year’s draft that two or more players from the same program were taken in one round – UCLA (Round 1), Clemson (R-2), Vanderbilt (R-3), Cal State Fullerton (R-3), Gonzaga (R-7), Oklahoma (R-14), Fresno State (R-22), Cal State Dominguez (R-32) and West Florida (R-36) are the other nine.

Tuesday, incoming freshman Granden Goetzman of Palmetto High School was taken in the second round (No. 75) by the Tampa Bay Rays and junior right-hander Jacob Barnes of St. Petersburg High went to the Milwaukee Brewers with the 431st overall pick in the 14th round.

In all, the Atlantic Sun Conference had 18 current players drafted, equaling the second-best total set in 2009. The conference record of 21 draftees came in 2006.

Both Barnes and Goetzman have the option of joining the Eagles in the fall if they don’t sign a professional contract with the organizations that drafted them.
