Bases loaded walk dooms Miracle

By Staff | Jun 16, 2011

Fort Myers dropped its second game in a row to Jupiter Wednesday night, falling 3-2 in the ninth inning as Taylor Krick drew a bases loaded walk against Matt Hauer to end the game.

It was the second time this week the Miracle (32-34) lost on the road in the final at-bat, also dropping a 5-4 decision in 11 innings against Bradenton last Saturday. Hauser was on the mound for that loss as well, and is now 0-2 in five appearances with the Miracle.

Woes on the road continue for Fort Myers, who have now lost eight straight away from Hammond Stadium, and 15 of their last 20 games overall. They now sit 2.5 games back of St. Lucie, with four games to play in the first half. The Mets and Cardinals were rained out, and will play a double-header Thursday.

Jupiter held a 2-0 lead going into the 8th inning, until the Miracle broke through with its first two runs of the series against reliever Ramon Benjamin. After a pair of singles by Aaron Hicks and Danny Rams, Josmil Pinto grounded out to put the Miracle on the board. Ramon Santana followed with a double to tie the game at 2-2.

Benjamin (5-0) cruised through the top of the ninth, pitching a 1-2-3 inning, to notch the win.

Fort Myers had been held scoreless for 16 straight innings in the series after a complete game gem by Matt Montgomery Tuesday, and seven scoreless from Rob Rasmussen Wednesday. The Miracle had gone scoreless for 21 and a third innings overall, going without a run since the third inning on Monday at home against Bradenton.

Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen gave the team another quality outing, giving up just two earned runs in seven innings for the no decision. He has now allowed just four runs in his last 31.2 innings pitched (five starts).

The two team’s will wrap the three-game series on Thursday afternoon, with a 12:05 start at Roger Dean Stadium. Both teams will then be off Friday through Sunday for the 2011 Florida State League All Star Game, which will take place Saturday night in Clearwater.
