‘Cheers for Literacy’ celebration set for June 23

By Staff | Jun 19, 2011

Literacy Volunteers of Lee County has announced its third annual “Cheers for Literacy” celebration will be held on June 23 at The Blue Coyote Supper Club in Fort Myers. The event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and the cost is $5 per person. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available and the event is open to the public.

All proceeds from the event and a Silent Auction will benefit the Literacy Volunteers of Lee County organization to fund its adult literacy programs, one of which is in Lehigh Acres.

“For many, when they hear ‘literacy'” they think of children. Children’s literacy is, of course, of the highest importance. But the best thing a child can have is a literate parent, and 13-20 percent of adults in Lee County are not literate,” said Tess Murphy, executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Lee County (LVLC). It is a is a nonprofit agency that provides free adult literacy programs through trained volunteers in Lee County with offices in Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres and East Fort Myers.

It is open to adult students who want to learn to read and write, or who are speakers of other languages and wish to learn English.

To RSVP for this event, contact the LVLC Fort Myers office at 239.415.3621 or lvlcread@gmail.com.
