Man saves mother and her baby inside car in Lehigh canal
Thanks to quick thinking and knowing how to swim, a Lehigh Acres man has rescued a mother ane her baby after the woman’s car landed in a canal near 32nd St. West and Ann Ave. North this morning.
The rescuer who lives on the canal said he had gone outside to leave for work when he noticed that there was a vehicle in the canal.
He said it was scary but because of the adrenaline in his body, he jumped into the canal and swam over to the vehicle and pulled the baby out and then pulled the woman out to safety.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team assisted in the recovery of the vehicle from the canal. On Friday, June 24, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a vehicle in a canal at the corner of 32nd Street West and Ann Avenue North, Lehigh Acres. Deputies responded to the scene and met with the 34-year-old driver who said she was driving east on 32nd Street West when she came to the stop sign at 32nd Street West and Ann Avenue North. The driver said she attempted to stop but her brakes failed. The vehicle continued to travel and eventually plunged into a canal, authorities said. Deputies talked with Gonzales, 2921 Ann Avenue North, who said he was coming out of his house to go to work when he heard someone yelling there was a car in the canal. He then ran to the canal and jumped in pulling the driver and her two-year-old son out of the vehicle. Gonzales brought both of them safely to shore, officials said. Gonzales said he did not think about what had to be done he just jumped in the canal. The mother and her two-year-old son were transported to Lehigh Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.
