Marauders win 7-5 battle to sweep Miracle
BRADENTON – After a game-tying RBI single by Fort Myers Miracle center fielder Aaron Hicks in the top of the seventh, the Bradenton Marauders pushed two runs across in the bottom of the inning to sweep the Miracle 7-5 Saturday.
Down 5-4, Hicks pasted the first pitch from Marauder reliever Profirio Lopez into left field to score James Beresford with two out and tie the game. Bradenton answered with the eventual game-winning run scoring on a Ramon Cabrera triple. Cabrera also drove in the go-ahead run in the 14th inning of Thursday’s series opener in Hammond Stadium.
The Marauders drew first blood in the opening inning for the second consecutive night with back-to-back RBI singles by Aaron Baker and Calvin Anderson off Minnesota Twins pitcher Kevin Slowey.
Slowey, in his third rehabilitation appearance with the Miracle this season, threw two innings and gave up a pair of runs on three hits while striking out four. Kane Holbrooks replaced Slowey to start the third inning and completed the game with five runs allowed on nine hits.
The Miracle took their only lead in the last 26 innings when Reggie Williams and Jamaal Hawkins combined for back-to-back two-run doubles to erase a three run deficit, 4-3. Williams picked up his fourth double of the year and has 15 runs batted in while Hawkins garnered his first multihit game with the Miracle while also stealing his first base in the Florida State League.
The Marauders responded with another two-run inning in the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead on RBI hits by Adalberto Santos and Baker.
Eliecer Navarro started for the Marauders and lasted four innings, but gave up five hits and four runs while fanning six. Lopez (2-1) was the winning pitcher and Jason Erickson earned his third save with a perfect final two innings. Holbrooks (2-9) was the losing pitcher for the Miracle.
The Miracle (34-39) play one game to finish the weekend Sunday at Charlotte (31-41) before returning to Hammond Stadium for seven in a row beginning Monday.
