Miracle fall 3-1 to Stone Crabs
PORT CHARLOTTE – Starting pitcher Alex Colome and the Charlotte Stone Crabs pitching staff held the Fort Myers Miracle to just two hits Sunday at the Charlotte Sports Park en route to 3-1 win.
Colome (5-5) picked up the win, pitching six innings of one-hit baseball while striking out five. The only run allowed by Colome came in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. The Miracle put the first two hitters, James Beresford and Derek McCallum, on base with a pair of walks. After a wild pitch moved the runners up one base, Nick Romero’s one-hop scorcher was snared by first baseman Michael Sheridan, but Beresford scored.
The Stone Crabs quickly took the lead when Mark Thomas crushed a Jhon Garcia 2-1 pitch over the left field wall. Thomas hit three home runs and drove in eight runs in seven games against the Miracle this season.
Garcia (3-2) picked up the loss, but allowed only the two runs on the Thomas homer through four innings. Matt Schuld pitched the final four innings and gave up a solo homer to Greg Sexton in the eighth.
Oswaldo Arcia, making his Miracle debut, went 1-for-4 and notched the Miracle’s hit in the fourth inning. Aaron Hicks was the only other Miracle batter to scratch a hit off of a dominant pitching performance.
The Miracle (34-40) return to Hammond Stadium to begin a seven-game homestand Monday night by hosting the Stone Crabs (32-41). Tom Stuifbergen is expected to start with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
