July programs at East County Regional Library

July’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

ADULTS

English Café

10 a.m. Fridays, 22, 29

6 p.m. Mondays, July 18, 25

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

Book Discussion: Sara Gruen’s “Ape House”

3:30 p.m. Monday, July 11

When a family of bonobo apes who know American Sign Language are kidnapped from a language laboratory, their mysterious appearance on a reality TV show propels scientist Isabel Duncan, together with reporter John Thigpen, on a personal mission to rescue them. This entertaining book calls into question our assumptions about these animals who share 99.4% of our DNA. The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.

Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Mondays, July 11, 18, 25

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Poetry Room

6 p.m. Tuesday, July 19

Poetry Lovers Unite! Join other like-minded people to talk about poetry and share what it means to you. Bring your favorite poem and listen to the poetry of others in a friendly, receptive environment. Registration is required.

FAMILY

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m. Monday, July 11

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 12, 19, 26

10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, July 13, 20, 27

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

KIDS

Kids Read Down Fines

4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6

3 – 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.
