Miracle start road trip with 9-5 win

By Staff | Jul 6, 2011

PORT ST. LUCIE – Fort Myers celebrated Independence Day with an offensive outburst in St. Lucie, downing the Mets 9-5. The Miracle started their eight-game road trip on a high note, beating the Mets for just the third time in nine tries this season.

After taking a 6-0 shutout at the hands of Charlotte on Sunday night, Fort Myers wasted few offensive opportunities, scoring all nine of its runs with two outs, going 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Outfielder Oswaldo Arcia led the offensive attack with a 4-for-5, three RBI night. He drove in the first and last two runs of the game.

James Beresford led the game off with an infield hit, and after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Arcia drove him in with a line drive into right field.

Up 1-0 in the third, Fort Myers chased Mets starter Scott Moviel with a two-out, five-run rally. Aaron Hicks drove in the first run on a sharp grounder to first that took a wicked hop over Stefan Welch into right field. After another single by Arcia, Anderson Hidalgo drove in his first of two runs with a base hit to left. That set the stage for Danny Rams, who hit a towering three-run home run over the left field wall. It was his sixth home run of the season, and his second consecutive game with a three-run homer.

Moviel (4-6) took the loss, lasting only three innings while allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

The Mets responded with an eight batter, three-run bottom of the third inning against Miracle stater Logan Darnell (5-1). The lefty allowed only scattered singles the rest of the night in a strong seven-inning performance for the win.

After an Anderson Hidalgo two-out RBI single in the seventh, Fort Myers ran into trouble leading 7-3 in the eighth. Reliever Matt Tone took over for Darnell, and walked three consecutive batters to open the inning. Andrew Albers was then summoned in from the bullpen and limited the damage to only two runs.

After giving up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Fran-cisco Pena, Albers struck out Rylan Sandoval, in-duced a fielder’s choice RBI groundout from Pedro Zapata, and struck out Juan Lagares, the league’s top hitter, to end the threat.

Leading by only two runs, Fort Myers added two insurance runs in the ninth. A single by Beresford and a second walk of the night by Aaron Hicks set the table for Oswaldo Arcia. After building a 2-2 count, and fouling off several tough pitches, Arcia crushed a fastball from Nick Carr that skipped off the left-center field wall.

Albers picked up a save, his third of the year.

Fort Myers (5-6, 39-42) returns to action tonight in St. Lucie (6-4, 44-36) as Miracle starter Kane Holbrooks faces off against Mets righty Armando Rodriguez. After three more games against the Mets, the Miracle will head to Brevard Country for a four-game series against the Manatees.
