Miracle rally late, win 5-4
VIERA – The Fort Myers Miracle rallied late for four runs to wipe out a 4-1 deficit and held on to beat the Brevard County Manatees 5-4 Friday night.
The Miracle (7-8) scratched for one run in the seventh inning on three walks and a fielder’s choice to close the gap to 4-2. They strung together four singles in the eighth to take their first lead, which proved to be the game-winning lead.
Jhon Goncalves got the big hit, a bases-loaded, two-run single off reliever Evan Anundsen to tie the game at 4-4. James Beresford followed with a sac-fly to center to score Jamaal Hawkins for the game-winning run.
Miracle reliever Edgar Ibarra (2-6) had one of his best outings of the season, throwing two scoreless innings in relief of Tom Stuifbergen for the win. He gave up just one single, and struck out three. Matt Hauser threw a scoreless ninth to nail down his second save this week, and third overall.
Mark Willinsky (2-3) took the loss for Brevard, giving up three hits to the Miracle in the eighth.
Stuifbergen went six innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one. Manatees starter Austin Ross was sharp in a no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Nick Romero, who collected a season-high four hits, led the Miracle. All 10 Miracle hits were singles.
With the win, the Miracle (41-44 overall) improve to 3-2 on the current eight-game road swing on the east coast. They face the Manatees in a return match at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
