South rocks Cape 10-1 in LL semifinal

By Staff | Jul 13, 2011

Throughout the District 9 Little League Tournament, the Cape Coral American 11-12 All-Star squad has cruised, making it look like they were taking a victory lap toward sectionals in North Port.

Cape ran into South Fort Myers Tuesday night at Fleishman Park in the winner’s bracket game, and the wheels came off.

After outscoring opponents 63-1 in their previous pool and championship series games, it was Cape’s turn to be roughed up.

South Fort Myers’ bats pounded out 13 hits, including four home runs. Cleanup hitter Giovany Lorenzo hit two of the homers en route to a 10-1 win to advance to the District 9 championship finals.

Their first loss puts Cape American in the consolation bracket final at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against Hancock at Fleishman Park. Hancock eliminated Fort Myers American 15-12 in a consolation bracket game at Buckingham Tuesday night.

Lorenzo, who did some extra hitting with his dad in the morning, drove in six runs to lead the South attack. Mike Morris and Drew Dwyer also went deep, while pitcher Gus Cunningham silenced Cape’s bats with a complete-game four-hitter.

Cape was powerless to stop the pounding.

“Hats off to South Fort Myers. Everything we threw they hit,” Cape American head coach Chuck Alexander said. “Their pitcher did a great job, but we have to find a way to get them out.”

Starting pitcher Tyler Shuck was in trouble from the outset. Cunningham walked and Ben Hourigan singled before Morris hit one over the fence for a three-run homer.

Lorenzo made it back-to-back with a solo shot to make it 4-0 as South batted around in the first inning.

In the second, Cunningham walked. With one out, Morris singled in front of Lorenzo, who went deep again for a three-run blast to open a 7-0 lead.

“I didn’t think they’d go out at first. I thought they’d be one-hoppers,” Lorenzo said.

After Cape American got on the board in the top of the third, Will Sanger came into pitch the third and was greeted by Dwyer’s solo shot making it 8-1. South concluded the scoring on Lorenzo’s two-run single in the fifth off Tre Waltz.

Cunningham’s only struggle came in the fourth when Shuck, Steven Grigiski and Sanger each singled. Leftfielder Dwyer threw out Shuck at the plate to kill a potential rally.

Cunningham allowed four hits and one walk, striking out eight. The run he allowed was unearned.

Cape’s only run came on Luke Endsley’s double and an error off the bat of Brice Abrams.

It was South’s bats that did the talking this night.

“I was expecting a battle. Cape has a great team with great pitching, hitting and fielding,” Lorenzo said.

“This is the first time we’ve been tested. They came out hitting the ball,” Cape coach Bill Shuck said. “It was their day and that’s it.”
