Tusculum hires former FGCU volleyballer
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Tusculum College Wednesday announced the hiring of former Florida Gulf Coast University player Audrey Campbell as a volleyball assistant coach.
Campbell, a native of Tampa, served as development assistant for athletic advancement at FGCU the past two years.
She will assist head coach Michael Robinson in all aspects of the program, including recruiting coordination, practice planning and implementation, strength and conditioning, fundraising and community engagement efforts.
“I am very excited for this opportunity as assistant volleyball coach at Tusculum College,” Campbell said. “Tusculum has a great program and I am really looking forward to working with Coach Robinson and the team as we create even more success. Serving as Development Assistant the past two years, I have learned a great deal that I look forward to bringing into this program. I love volleyball and I really can’t wait for the season to start. I feel very fortunate for the opportunity.”
On the court at FGCU, Campbell helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back Atlantic Sun regular-season titles (2007, 2008). She finished second in the league in hitting percentage (.407) as a junior and earned A-Sun All-Academic honors as a senior. In her two seasons, the Eagles posted an impressive 43-11 overall record, including 28-3 in conference play and a remarkable 19-1 record at home.
In 2007, she played in 19 matches tallying 98 kills and 41 blocks.
As a senior, Campbell finished with a .289 hitting percentage, which was ninth in the conference. She was also one of five Eagles to play in every set, accounting for 72 blocks, which are the third-best on the team.
In other FGCU news, women’s tennis coach Jennifer Gabou was reselected as Chair of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Southeast Region Committee for 2011-12.
Entering her fourth season at the helm of the Eagles, Gabou will chair a committee that also includes Roland Thornquist of Florida, Jennifer Hyde of Florida State, Jeff Wallace of Georgia and Stephanie Nickitas of UCF. The Southeast Region is made up of 19 teams.
“I’m very honored to be selected as the ITA Southeast Chair again for the 2011-12 season,” said Gabou. “The Southeast Region, which includes NCAA National Team Champion Florida, is arguably the best in the nation and to be selected as the chair again is really an honor.”
Besides overseeing a committee comprised of 4-5 voting members, Gabou also will serve as an ITA National Ranking Committee member and an ITA National Tournament Committee member. Among the many responsibilities, Gabou will help determine the at-large and wild card selections for ITA National Tournaments, work the ITA Fall Regional Tournament in Athens, Ga., and determine the region award winners.
Although ineligible for postseason play due to NCAA reclassifying, the Eagles battled in the standings throughout the season. Finishing just outside of the top six tournament-eligible teams, the Eagles are well positioned for a postseason run in their first year of eligibility in the 2011-12 season.
