Miracle hang on for 4-3 win

By Staff | Jul 18, 2011

DUNEDIN – The Fort Myers Miracle took a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning Sunday, and after a 50-minute rain delay, the Dunedin Blue Jays pulled within a run on a two-run home run by Ryan Schimpf. Miracle reliever Bruce Pugh held off the Jays the rest of the way for a 4-3 victory and his 11th save of the season.

Miracle catcher Josmil Pinto led the Miracle, going a season-best 4-for-4 with a game-tying RBI single in the fourth inning, and added a towering solo home run in the sixth to cap off the Miracle scoring. It is his first home run in the Florida State League.

Kane Holbrooks (5-9) continued to pitch well to start July with a strong six-inning performance, allowing just one earned run on six hits to pick up the win. The right-hander has given up just five earned runs in his last four starts (24 innings pitched).

Dunedin managed nine hits, but had no offensive support other than Schimpf, who also hit a solo home run off Holbrooks in the second.

The Miracle had only two hits through the first three innings off Blue Jays stater Deck McGuire, but strung together three runs on four hits in the fourth. After an RBI single by Pinto tied the game at 1-1, Steve Liddle clubbed a two-RBI double to the centerfield wall to put the Miracle ahead for good. Liddle is now 8-for-18 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and six RBI in his last five games.

McGuire (6-4), who had allowed just four earned runs in 22 innings since the All-Star break, gave up four earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work for the loss.

Alex Wimmers, the Twins’ first-round pick from 2010, made his first appearance for the club since April, and tossed a scoreless inning. Wimmers, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the week, issued a leadoff walk, but induced flyouts by the next three hitters to get through the inning without any damage.

The Miracle (46-47, 12-11) picked up their first win against the Blue Jays (52-41, 11-12) this season, after sweeping the Jays early in the year at Hammond Stadium. The second game of a four-game series is Monday at 7 p.m.
