Jays maul Miracle, 9-2
DUNEDIN – The Dunedin Blue Jays scored nine unanswered runs in the final five innings Monday night to maul the Fort Myers Miracle 9-2. With the win, Dunedin is 5-1 against the Miracle this season.
Miracle starter Pat Dean held off the Jays until the fifth when they scored three runs on three singles and a costly Miracle error. With the bases loaded and one out, Sean Ochinko hit a tapper to third baseman Nick Romero, whose throw home was wild to score a pair to tie it up 2-2. Brian Van Kirk then brought the go-ahead run home in with an RBI single. Dean (2-2) took the loss as the Miracle offense went quiet the rest of the night.
Dunedin starter Drew Hutchinson (3-1) gave up two runs early, but settled in to give up just five hits in six innings, while striking out eight and walking none for the win.
The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the first as Aaron Hicks clubbed the first of his two doubles with two out in the inning, and Oswaldo Arcia followed with an RBI single. Hicks now leads the team with 24 doubles on the year.
Anderson Hidalgo put the Miracle ahead by 2-0 with a third-inning solo home run, his fourth of the year.
Dunedin added at least one run in each of their final three innings. Jon Talley led off the sixth with a solo home run to center and Kevin Ahrens crushed a three-run shot in the seventh.
The Miracle (46-48, 12-12) and Blue Jays (51-43, 12-12) play the third game of a four-game series at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Right-hander Tom Stuif-bergen gets the start for the Miracle.
