Robert Archer Gilby

Robert Archer Gilby of Lehigh Acres, died on Monday, July 18, 2011. Gilby was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and was the son of the late Harry and Madolyn Gilby. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 58 years, Janet Gilby.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 323, the Elks Lodge 2602 and also a charter member.

His family said he will be remembered for his gentle ways, his humility and his willingness to work very hard to provide for his family.

Gilby spent 43 years in Staten Island, graduating from Tottenville High School. He served his country for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, retiring from the New York City Fire Department in 1967 after 20 years of service.

He moved to Lehigh Acres in 1972 and went back to work as the first full-time, paid, fireman in Lehigh Acres, retiring after 20 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Mullin Gilby; sons, Timothy Mullin and Michael Mullin; daughters, Maggie Eaton and Patti Auger; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He will also be missed by Florence Thompson of Hampton Falls, NH, whose husband, Jack, served with him in the Marine Corps.

Friends may gather to pay their respects from 4 – 6 p.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at the Anderson – Patterson Cremation and Funeral Services chapel.
