Threshers stifle Miracle bats
CLEARWATER – First baseman Jon Singleton launched a first-inning two-run home run to provide all the damage necessary as the Clearwater Threshers edged the Fort Myers Miracle 2-1 Thursday night.
Threshers starting pitcher Julio Rodriguez (12-6) was dominant, allowing only one run across seven innings while striking out 10 for the win. The right-hander sent down 10 in a row before Oswaldo Arcia tripled with one out in the top the seventh inning. After striking out the next hitter, Steve Liddle singled home Arica to cut the deficit in half.
Fort Myers wasted a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead in the eighth. Ramon Santana reached on an infield single to start the inning against reliever Andy Loomis. Estarlin De Los Santos reached as the Theshers third baseman bobbled a sac-bunt attempt, putting two on with no outs. James Beresford failed to move the runners up as his sacrifice attempt with two strikes was bunted foul for a strikeout. Clearwater Manager Dusty Wathan went to reliever Jordan Whatcott to face Anderson Hidalgo, and he induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Miracle starter Jhon Garcia (3-4) took the tough-luck loss, making only one mistake in the first inning. After a one-out walk was issued, Singleton blasted his eighth home run of the year over the right-field wall for the early 2-0 advantage. Garcia went a career-high seven innings, allowing only four scattered hits the rest of the way, striking out a season best of seven.
The Miracle (14-13, 48-49) face the Threshers (11-16, 50-46) again Friday night.
