Sherwin a distant third
Jake Sherwin felt lucky Friday. Lucky he ended up anywhere near the top of the Nolan Henke/Patty Berg Junior Masters golf tournament leaderboard.
The Cape Coral resident had trouble finding the fairway and the green, but not the hazards.
When he turned in his scorecard with a 75 on it, he placed third in the 19th annual tournament at Cypress Lake Country Club. Excuse him if he felt the urge to kneel to the golf gods and proclaim, “I’m not worthy.”
Sherwin, who started the final round six strokes behind the leader, finished with a 54-hole total of 5-over-par 221. He was the only Cape player to earn a trophy at the prestigious tournament in which four Cape boys placed in the top seven.
Third place might not have happened if he hadn’t had a near-flawless day chipping.
“I had a real rough day. I hit three fairways, five greens and put three balls in the hazard,” Sherwin said. “My chipping was spot on. I was putting it within three feet from difficult spots.”
Even if he shot the round of his life, it wouldn’t have been enough to overtake boys’ 16-18 division defending champion Jack Hernandez of Fort Myers who shot a final round of 69 for a tournament record 7-under 209 total and a nine-stroke victory over Jonathan Lowery of Fort Myers.
“I came in thinking Jonathan was going to have a good round, so I thought I had to go under,” said Hernandez, who led the field after each of the three rounds over three days. “I started to settle in on the back nine. I’m fortunate to win this tournament twice.”
It was a successful tournament for many Cape players, especially the four who finished in the top seven places. Another, Gina Falvey, took fourth in the girls’ 13-18 division.
Cape’s Anthony Myers (226), tied for third going into the final round, sputtered home with an 80 to finish fourth and Tyler Doyle (227), whose second-round 87 in effect took him out of the running, rallied for a 3-under 69 to finish fifth.
“That 87 was pretty bad. I had a goal to finish strong,” Doyle said. “I was in contention with that (first-round) 71.”
Michael Faulkner (229) came home seventh shooting a final round 79. Other Cape players included Anthony Montoya (238, 11th), Kyle Schulte (241, 13th), Daichi Dougherty (257, 20th), Zachary McBride (284, 25th) and Dylan DeForrest (294, 27th).
In the girls’ division, Kristin Swindell of Bradenton shot a tournament-low 74 Friday to breeze past Alva’s Kaitie Cross, who led the first two rounds, to win by six strokes.
Falvey (260) shot an 83 Friday to finish fourth behind Punta Gorda’s Megan Marone (251) in third.
“I was happy about improving every day, so I set one of my goals,” Falvey said. “I had fun.”
Cape’s Kaitlin Schafe was sixth (279) and Kelsey Fallisch (290) seventh.
The boys’ 13-15 division title was a battle between Bonita Springs residents. Landon Webber, who lead after each round, beat Sean Mazzola by five shots after a final round 79 for a 223 total.
Ross Lally (262) was the highest-finishing Cape player in the division in ninth place. Ryan Cooper (300) also played.
