Threshers complete sweep of Miracle 6-1
CLEARWATER – Clearwater Threshers starter Trevor May struck out 11 hitters across six innings and allowed just one run in a 6-1 victory Sunday over the Fort Myers Miracle.
The win completes a four-game sweep over the Miracle, outscoring them 25-8. The Miracle managed to win just one game against the Threshers, finishing 1-7 against them this season. Sunday was the final season matchup between the teams.
May started the game by striking out the side and had at least one strikeout in each of his six innings. He allowed the lone run in the third innin, when Nick Romero drove in James Beresford with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.
Overall, May (7-6) allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work for the win. The game remained tied 1-1 until the fifth inning when Jiwan James doubled home Troy Hanzawa to put the Threshers ahead for good.
Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen (4-6) lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits for the loss. He had allowed only two runs through the first six innings, but could not escape the seventh. After recording two quick outs, James doubled for the second time in the game to keep the inning alive. A pair of subsequent singles by Michael Dabbs and Jon Singleton forced Miracle Manager Jake Mauer to pull Stuifbergen in favor of reliever Bruce Pugh. The second pitch from Pugh was belted over the left field wall by Darin Ruf for a three-run homer, his 10th of the season, to put the Threshers up 6-1.
The Miracle managed only seven hits in the game, with designated hitter Danny Rams leading the way going 3-for-4 with a double.
The Miracle (48-52, 14-16) finished their eight-game road trip to the Tampa Bay area with a 3-5 mark, winning three-of-four against the Dunedin Blue Jays before being swept by the Threshers.
The Miracle host eight straight games at Hammond Stadium beginning Monday with a four-game series against the Tampa Yankees. Logan Darnell gets the start for the Miracle.
