Cape stars notch 3rd Series win

By Staff | Aug 11, 2011

The Cape Coral All-Stars only had one hit, but took advantage in other areas and made the Canada team pay with a 4-2 defeat Wednesday night in the Little League Senior Softball World Series.

The win is the third for Cape in its three Pool B games with one game remaining at 8 p.m. Thursday against the Asia Pacific Regional champion Makati City (Phillipines) team.

Cape is in good position to earn the first or second seeding for the championship semifinals starting Friday.

“We hit a lot of balls hard, but right at them,” said Cape manager John Manetta. “We had runners on constantly, but just did not come up with the big hit. We must have had at least 10 deep fly-ball outs.”

Turns out Cape benefitted enough from three walks, a hit batter, passed balls and four Canada defensive errors to nail down the victory.

Cape scored one run in each of the first four innings, taking a 3-0 lead before Canada got on the board.

Katie Grubb drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and scored on a throwing error on Sierra Myers’ sacrifice bunt.

Alyssa Langdale reached on an error to open the second inning and later scored an unearned run on a passed ball.

Meghan Sullivan scored the third Cape run after drawing a leadoff walk in the third. A passed ball and a stolen base later, Sullivan scored on a dropped third strike on Deniece Bent.

Leading 3-1 in the fourth, and still hitless, Jessica Nuccio got aboard on Canada’s fourth error. A passed ball and a groundout by Sarah Waitekus sent Nuccio to third. Mallory Gerrero pinch-ran for Nuccio and scored on a fielder’s choice play at the plate on Rylee Manetta’s squeeze bunt.

Winning pitcher Maddy Peres, who struck out seven over four innings, laced a two-out double in the fifth inning to spoil Canada’s Stephanie Church’s no-hitter, but was left stranded.

“We have to take care of business tomorrow against Asia Pacific,” said Manetta. “Are we feeling confident, absolutely. We’ve been confident throughout. We’ll have a good practice in the morning.”
