Charlotte drops Fort Myers 6-2
PORT CHARLOTTE – After a rain delay that lasted just over two hours, the Charlotte Stone Crabs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back in a 6-2 win Saturday night over the Fort Myers Miracle.
Two seven-inning games were scheduled as a makeup for Friday’s rainout, but one nine-inning game was played instead and the doubleheader was pushed back to Sunday.
Miracle starter Pat Dean (2-6) took the loss, giving up all six runs on 10 hits in four innings. Charlotte got on the board with an RBI double by Omar Luna in the second inning, and Mark Thomas cranked his 12th home run of the season, a two-run blast, in the third. The Stone Crabs added their final three runs in the fourth against Dean.
Albert Suarez (1-0) made his Florida State League debut for Charlotte and limited the Miracle to three hits and one earned run in 5 2/3 innings for the victory.
Aaron Hicks led off the sixth inning with a double, and eventually scored on a sac-fly by James Beresford. Hicks scored the second Miracle run in the eighth inning, walking to start the frame. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Hicks scored on an RBI single by Dan Rohlfing.
The Miracle bullpen combined to limit the Crabs to only one hit the rest of the night. Ricky Bowen tossed two innings, while Shooter Hunt and Cole Nelson threw a perfect seventh and eighth, respectively
The Miracle and Stone Crabs wrap the series with two games starting at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Tom Stuifbergen and Alex Wimmers are projected to start for the Miracle.
