Miracle fall to Mets’ last surge 4-1
The St. Lucie Mets scored three runs late to outlast the Fort Myers Miracle 4-1 Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.
Starters Matt Tomshaw for the Miracle and John Church for the Mets engaged in a pitching duel through seven innings. Tomshaw puzzled Mets hitters, allowing just one run on five hits.
Making just his third start since joining the Miracle from the GCL Twins, the southpaw faced just four over the minimum and recorded 14 of 21 outs on the ground.
Church, also earning a no decision, lasted six innings and yielded just one run to the Miracle with two strikeouts.
The Mets broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with back-to-back RBI hits by Gilbert Gomez and Wilmer Flores with two outs off Miracle reliever Bruce Pugh. St. Lucie added an insurance run in the ninth inning when catcher Dock Doyle smacked a run-scoring double to center.
The Miracle’s only run came in the third inning. Nick Romero led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Jamaal Hawkins. Aaron Hicks then plated Romero with a chopper to short to pick up his 35th RBI.
Three members of the Miracle had multi-hit nights – Dan Rohlfing 2-for-4, Nick Romero 2-for-3, and Angel Morales 3-for-3.
Pugh (2-4) was the losing pitcher and Mets reliever Eric Niesen (3-2) earned the win with 1 2/3 innings scoreless. Jeff Kaplan picked up his 11th save of the season.
The Miracle (56-71, 22-35) head to Charlotte to take on the Stone Crabs for a unique doubleheader Friday evening. The Miracle resume a 1-1 game in the seventh inning that was suspended due to rain. After the completion of game one, a seven-inning affair, they will begin a nine-inning contest.
