Miracle take two from Crabs

By Staff | Aug 28, 2011

PORT CHARLOTTE – For the first time this season, the Fort Myers Miracle won both games of a doubleheader, beating the Charlotte Stone Crabs 3-0 and 6-1 Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Miracle pitching staff did an outstanding job working out of several jams in both games, as the Stone Crabs offense sputtered in key situations. The Stone Crabs were a combined 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position in the 14 innings, leaving 18 men on the bases.

The Miracle shutout in game one is their second of the week after also blanking the Mets last Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.

Left-hander Edgar Ibarra (4-10) got the win in game one, tossing five shutout innings for his fourth win of the season. He limited the Crabs to four hits, while walking two and striking out five.

Matt Hauser allowed only one more hit the rest of the way in two innings of relief for his seventh save of the season. He struck out three and walked none.

The Miracle pushed across single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings against Charlotte starter Albert Suarez. The Miracle got on the board in the third on a two-out solo home run by Anderson Hidalgo, his sixth of the year. Angel Morales hit a ground-rule double in the fourth inning and eventually scored on a fielding error by shortstop Matt Hall. A pair of singles by Morales and Oswaldo Arcia set up a fielder’s choice RBI for Dan Rohlfing in the sixth, who reached on an error by Mike Sheridan.

Suarez (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

In game two, the Miracle roughed up Stone Crabs starter Alex Koronis, pushing five runs across in the first two innings en route to a 6-1 victory. Fort Myers sent eight batters to the plate in the first, with five players singling against the right-hander, including RBI hits by Morales, Rohlfing and Reggie Williams. Arcia clubbed a two-out, two-RBI double in the second frame.

Koronis (7-8) lasted just two innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits for the loss.

Caleb Thielbar got the start for the Miracle and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, and left two on the bases in the second to keep the Stone Crabs off the board. It was his first start in the Twins organization after signing as a minor league free agent on Aug. 20th.

Clint Dempster (2-0), who was activated off the DL earlier in the week, gave up a run on four hits in two innings to notch the win. Shooter Hunt held the Crabs without a hit the rest of the way for a three-inning save. He walked four, but struck out four as well.

Rohlfing hit a solo home run to left in the top of the seventh inning against Charlotte reliever Josh Satow to cap off the Miracle night. Rohlfing led the Miracle offense with three RBI between the two games. Morales lead the team in hits (3-for-7) and runs (3).

The teams finish off their season series in Fort Myers starting Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. from Hammond Stadium.
