Crabs blank Miracle, 7-0 Sunday

By Staff | Aug 29, 2011

The Charlotte Stone Crabs blanked the Fort Myers Miracle 7-0 Sunday at Hammond Stadium.

Charlotte starter C.J. Riefenhauser (1-2) earned his first win of the season with six shutout innings and allowing just three hits. Miracle starter Alex Wimmers (1-3) was saddled with the loss despite delivering his longest outing of the year. Wimmers allowed just two runs over six innings, but ran into trouble with two outs in the seventh.

After yielding a single to Ty Morrison and walking Tyler Bortnick, Charlotte left fielder Anthony Scelfo hit a high looper that deflected off of Angel Morales’ glove on a sliding attempt. Morrison and Bortnick came in to score and Wimmers was removed for reliever Cole Nelson.

Nelson gave up an RBI double to Michael Sheridan that capped off a four-run inning and extended the lead to 6-0 for the Crabs. Nelson remained in the game for the final two innings and gave up one unearned run.

The Miracle (59-73, 25-37) finish the season series with Charlotte (62-69, 32-30) Monday at Hammond Stadium.

B.J. Hermsen will take the mound for the Miracle.
