JUPITER – Alex Wimmers tossed a seven-inning no-hitter for the Fort Myers Miracle Saturday night to complete a doubleheader shutout sweep of the Jupiter Hammerheads, 7-0 and 1-0..

Facing the minimum of 21 baters, Wimmers (2-3) silenced the Hammerheads bats with a dominant late-season performance. The only base runners to reach were Dallas Poulk and Greg Glime, each on walks.

Poulk walked with one out in the fourth inning only to be erased on a double play. With an 0-2 count, Wimmers forced a grounder up the middle out of Jeff Dominguez. Shortstop James Beresford scooped up the ball, tagged Poulk and fired to first for a 6-3 twin killing.

Glime earned a free pass in the sixth, but was gunned down trying to steal second base by Miracle catcher Danny Rams for the third out of the inning.

Needing a little help from the offense, Wimmers was handed a lead in the top of the fifth. Nick Romero walked with one out by Jupiter starter Jose Rosario and advanced to second on a groundout by Jamaal Hawkins.

Aaron Hicks then singled him home.

Wimmers entered the final inning with the top of the order due up and calmly retired Poulk on a foul out and Jose Torres on a chopper to short. Down to the final out, Wimmers’ first pitch to Dominguez was launched to deep right field. Oswaldo Arcia followed the flight of the ball to the warning track before making a leaping catch against the wall to secure the no-hitter and Miracle win.

A true pitcher’s duel, Rosario (3-2) fanned nine Miracle hitters in the first four innings and the Hammerhead staff totaled 12 strikeouts in the second game.

In game one, the Miracle jumped out to an early lead when Angel Morales teed off on a 1-2 pitch from Hammerhead starter and MLB rehabber Brian Sanches. After a one-out single by James Beresford, Morales deposited a big fly over the left field wall to give the Miracle a 2-0 lead.

Miracle starter Edgar Ibarra (5-10) delivered a seven-inning shutout, keeping the Hammerhead order off balance with a sharp mix of pitches. Ibarra racked up five strikeouts and allowed only three baserunners to reach second.

The Miracle added some insurance in the fifth and sixth innings. Nick Romero earned his team leading 52nd RBI of the season with a one-out single off reliever Sean Donatello.

In the sixth, Rams crushed a 3-2 offering from A.J. Bautisto out of Roger Dean Stadium with the bases loaded to create plenty of breathing room for the Miracle.

Miracle pitchers shutout Jupiter for all 14 innings Saturday and allowed just five hits in the doubleheader sweep.
