Alan D. Lundy Jr.
Alan Douglas Lundy Jr., 86, of Fayetteville, N.C., and formerly of Lehigh Acres, died on September 5, 2011. Born September 1, 1925, he was the second of four children.
When he was 16 he went to work on an uncle’s farm in New Jersey where he learned animal husbandry and crops. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for 32 years. He served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam as an airplane mechanic.
When he retired in March 1974, he moved to Lehigh Acres, where he cared for his aging parents until their deaths.
He was a lay pastor in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lehigh. He moved to Fayetteville in December 2001 to be closer to family.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Cain; a brother, John Lundy; a daughter, Susan Hall and her husband David; two sons, James R. Nitschke and his wife Shari, and David Nitschke and his wife Denice.
He also leaves behind a grandson, Jonathan Hall, who cared for him for several years in his home, and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His youngest sister, Jean Dixon, and his parents, Alan and Elsie Lundy, predeceased him.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 9, 2011 at Windsor UMC in Ammon, N.C., with burial following at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery at 2 p.m. with military honors.
