Prep Report: Oasis overpowers Marco

After an exhausting five matches Saturday in their own invitational tournament, the Oasis Sharks were back on the volleyball court Monday rested, refreshed and overpowering in a 25-9, 25-9, 25-22 rout of Marco Island Academy, a first-year program.

“All of our hard work is paying off,” said Sharks coach James Mikolajczyk. “Each night you can see the girls learning and developing. We are a young team with 14 freshmen in our program and we start four.”

Emma Nelson led the Sharks with three service aces and 16 assists while Larra Bickelhaupt added two aces and five kills. Danielle Beber served up one ace to go with three kills and five blocks.

The win gives the Sharks a .500 record on the season at 5-5 heading into their next match on Saturday when they host St. John Neumann.

Ida Baker 3, Cypress Lake 0: Payton Van Horn and Louie Ross turned in almost identical double-doubles in Ida Baker’s commanding 25-14, 25-11, 25-13 sweep at Cypress Lake.

Van Horn delivered 11 kills to go with 13 digs while Ross had 11 kills and 12 digs. Van Horn also added 15 service points. Madison Kobs handed out 29 assists as the Bulldogs won their seventh straight match.

“The core group we had on the floor tonight was just incredible,” said Bulldogs coach Renee Van Horn.

The Bulldogs (9-2) visit Island Coast Tuesday night for their first district match.

Mariner 3, East Lee County 1: Mariner won the battle of attrition with a 25-8, 17-25, 25-16, 26-14 triumph at East Lee County.

Summer Greenwell and Brittini Smith led the Tritons with five service aces apiece and Greenwell handed out nine assists.

Alia Mann and Heather Gillions each contributed three kills.

The Tritons (3-2) journey north to Lemon Bay Tuesday night.
