Seahawks fall, 36-29
NAPLES – It wasn’t meant to be for the Cape Coral Seahawks Friday night, falling to the Lely Trojans 36-29 at Trojan Field.
“We were very poor everywhere in the game,” said Seahawks coach Brad Metheny.
A mostly quiet first half ended in a 7-7 tie. The Seahawks’ lone score came from senior runningback Dustin Thibadeau, who scampered in from 25 yards out to tie the game.
The Seahawks started the second half with the ball and took a 15-7 lead with a fast six-play drive that culminated in a 23-yard TD strike to wideout Rashaan Gaymon from quarterback Kurt Benkert. Back-to-back completions by Benkert got the Seahawks inside the Trojans 45. A 20-yard run by Thibadeau set up the TD pass to Gaymon. Cape led for the first time after a two-point conversion.
Lely reclaimed the lead 21-15 heading to the fourth quarter. Cape’s defense held following a fumbled punt return inside the Seahawk 20.
Lely marched 60 yards in five plays to score on a eight-yard pass completion.
Facing a fourth-and-three to start the fourth, the Seahawks looked to Thibadeau again, taking a direct snap for a 20-yard gain inside the Trojan 5. The Seahawks failed to convert on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal.
“We practiced that play every day this week, and the guys just lined up wrong,” said Metheny. “We gotta do what we are coached to do and we don’t do that. We change plays and make up stuff on our own. We don’t tackle on defense and we don’t block on offense. We have a lot of work to do.”
Cape managed to retake the lead following back-to-back scoring drives, but two final TDs by the Trojans sealed the victory.
