Riverdale Raiders shell Vikings, 45-6

By Staff | Oct 1, 2011

Riverdale overpowered Bishop Verot at Viking Stadium 45-6 Friday night with a versatile offensive attack.

The Vikings caught the fury of a Raiders team that came into the game with something to prove.

“Our players had a chip on their shoulder after last week,” Riverdale coach Rob Hinson said in reference to a 34-31 loss to Fort Myers. “We kind of had a hangover and our attitude was to get back on the winning track.”

The Raiders offense came out firing. After Verot fumbled on the second play of the game, Riverdale took only four plays to go 25 yards for the touchdown. The last yard was covered by quarterback Anthony Snyder.

All three possessions in the first quarter resulted in points for the Raiders. They racked up 134 yards of total offense in that quarter.

In contrast, the Vikings could not get on track. They did not get a first down until 4:21 was left in the first half. Of their seven first-half possessions, the Vikings punted on five, and turned the ball over the other two.

Verot coach Phil Dorn was surprised by the Raiders passing game of the Raiders.

“They passed better than we expected,” he said. “Our scouting had determined that their strength was running, and so we prepared for that. We’ve got to adjust better when we saw they were passing that well.”

Anthony Snyder threw two touchdown passes, both to Gabriel McNulty. The first was a 50-yarder where McNulty slipped behind the defense. The second came when McNulty made an athletic play on a ball that Snyder threw up for grabs. He outjumped and pulled the ball away from the defense. Snyder ended up 6-of-16 for 138 yards.

The Raiders gained 331 yards rushing on 43 carries for a total offense of 469 yards.

The Vikings only had 52 yards rushing on 16 carries, and 138 yards passing. However, 70 of that came on a halfback pass from T.J. Oceant to Dylan Hinkle late.

The Vikings play at Ida Baker Thursday night.
