Fall in love with a new pet this fall

By Staff | Oct 5, 2011

Say farewell to summer and fall in love with your new best friend. That’s the suggestion today of Ria Brown of Lee county Domestic Animal Services which is offering what she said is the chance to adopt a pet at half off the regular fee during the month of October.

The cost to take home your new best friend will range from $47.50 for a puppy to just $12.50 for a senior pet, Brown said. Cats and kittens are always two for one at Animal Services. The adoption package includes spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip ID, and many other veterinary services.

Adopting a shelter pet will not only save the life of the special pet you take home, but it will also enrich your life, Brown said.

Dogs save lives, protect people, are used to fight crime, and become service dogs for the handicapped. Cats provide a sympathetic ear, great listening skills, and boundless affection.

“Nevertheless, shelters are full of so many homeless pets. LCDAS takes in more than 10,000 pets each year. People may not realize that abandoned and neglected dogs and cats can make wonderful companions and family pets. These animals have the potential to enrich people’s lives in so many ways,” said Donna Ward, Animal Services director. “Our goal is to match each of these unique pets with a person or family for the benefit of both.”

The health benefits of pet ownership have been long established. Statistics show pet owners on average have lower blood pressure, fewer bouts of depressions and often exercise more. Children who have pets generally learn at a young age the responsibility and the life-long commitment that comes with owning a pet. Pets also enhance family and social relationships, promote laughter, and act as a non-judgmental audience and sounding board, Brown said.

During October’s Fall in Love Adoption Promotion, potential adopters may visit Lee County Domestic Animal Services located off Six Mile Cypress Parkway, next to the Sheriff’s Office, to meet potential companions and discover the many benefits of having a pet: happiness, companionship, improved physical and emotional health, and unconditional love, Brown said. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
