Baker wins overtime thriller
The Ida Baker Bulldogs improved their record to 3-2 Thursday night thanks to a 21-20 overtime win over Bishop Verot.
Baker scored in OT thanks to Brian Johnson’s second rushing touchdown of the game and although Verot answered with a touchdown of its own, the extra-point kick sailed wide right handing the Bulldogs the win.
The night was filled with pink as the Bulldogs were raising awareness for breast cancer. The Bulldogs wore special pink uniforms sending the crowd into a frenzy. The momentum did not carry over to the first quarter as the teams traded five punts in the scoreless period.
Bulldogs quarterback Reece Attwood could not get anything going, but showed some positive signs in the second quarter. Despite the offensive improvement, the game remained scoreless as the teams exchanged more punts and turnovers.
Both teams fumbled in the red zone before the sloppy first half ended all tied up at 0-0. The defenses for both teams were stout all night.
Attwood finally broke through in the third quarter. He took the Bulldogs on a 62-yard drive, in which he completed 3-of-4 passes for 22 yards. The drive was capped off in a big way on a six-yard touchdown run by sophomore Alex Febles, who plays offense, defense and special teams for the Bulldogs.
Vikings senior quarterback Danny Foye was stumped by the ferocious Bulldog defense as he threw his second interception of the game late in the third. The game was in Baker’s hands heading to the fourth.
Foye was not to be denied as he used two Baker penalties and a two-yard TD toss to tie the game at 7-7.
The Bulldogs punted on their next possession, but were bailed out when Verot turned the ball over again setting up the Bulldogs’ next score.
Brian Johnson scored his first TD on a nifty six-yard run giving the Bulldogs the lead late in the the quarter. The drive took just two plays and seven yards because the Vikings fumble came inside their own 10.
Foye had some magic left. He led a seven-play scoring drive in just three minutes. The big play, a 15-yard touchdown catch by D.J. Oceant and the teams headed to overtime.
Baker struck first with Johnson scoring with little challenge. Both teams got a set of downs from the 10-yard line and Baker cashed in for seven points on the touchdown and extra point.
The Vikings scored easily as well, but it was the PAT that decided it all. Kicker Jesse Mitchell, who had been steady all night, lined a wobbly kick wide left to seal their fate.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-2 as they head to North Fort Myers next Friday. Verot (1-5) hosts the Island Coast Gators.
