Oasis rings up 5th win in a row

By Staff | Oct 8, 2011

After a lackluster first half, Oasis coach Jason Bowman needed to find a way to spark his team. He did that with the second half kickoff, surprising Miami Christian with an onside kick that Oasis recovered.

The play brought the Sharks to life and led to a 19-point third quarter breaking open a tie game and giving the unbeaten Sharks a 40-22 win Friday night in a six-man football game at the Storms Complex.

The Sharks defense produced its best game of the year, forcing five turnovers. Will Jynella scored four touchdowns, three on offense.

With the game tied 14-14, Bowman called for the onside kick, which Austin Beach recovered at the Miami Christian 32.

“We wanted to see how they lined up and that’s when I gave the sign,” Bowman said. “We changed things up at halftime with our blocking and picked it up.”

Moments later, Jynella ran it in from six yards out to give the Sharks (5-0) the lead for good at 20-14.

Moments later, after the Victors gave the ball up on downs, Josh Ertter found Justin Vaughn for a 38-yard pass play. That set up a nine-yard TD pass from Ertter to Beach to make it 27-14 after Joe Pascale ran in the one-point conversion.

Pascale then made his presence felt on defense, intercepting a Shamar Borbelia pass and returning it to the 1, where he put on his running shoes and scored the Sharks’ second TD in 35 seconds to make it 33-14.

“It was just a hard-fought game by the defense,” Pascale said. “We were flat in the first half and needed to pick up the intensity and finish strong.”

Pascale also added a fumble recovery, while Jon Pogue had a pair of interceptions, one in the end zone to kill a Victor threat.

Miami Christian (2-4) rallied when Franklin De Izaguirre blocked a punt and returned it for a score to cut the lead to 33-21 late in the fourth quarter, but Jynella went in for his fourth score of the night on a 45-yard run to seal the win.

“Our defense played its best game of the year. We tackled great, which has been a problem at times,” Bowman said. “They kept us going when the offense wasn’t clicking.”

The Victors, who traveled four hours for the game, then had to wait another hour when game officials showed up late, took their frustrations out on the Sharks at the start as Denio Machado and Borbelia registered turnovers in the first quarter, but the Sharks held when Pogue picked off a pass.

After a scoreless first quarter, Max Boyd got the Victors on the board with a 21-yard TD strike from Borbelia to make it 7-0 after Curtis’ PAT run.

The Sharks responded a minute later when Jynella ran it in from a yard out to cut the lead to 7-6 after the blocked kick. Dalton Wessman sacked Machado in the end zone for a safety for the Sharks’ first lead 8-7.

Jynella returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and the 14-14 tie at the half.
