Prep Report: Panthers turn back Seahawks

By Staff | Oct 14, 2011

In a match filled with scoring runs and changing momentum, it was Cypress Lake that had both at the right times Thursday night in a 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21 volleyball victory at Cape Coral.

After dropping the first game by two points, the Seahawks grabbed the momentum with a thrilling victory in the second game despite twice having eight point leads sliced to just two. The Seahawks hung on as the Panthers gave away the final three points on unforced errors.

The teams were at it again in the third game, trading six and seven-point runs. Leading 15-14, the Panthers served two aces and two other volleys were mishandled by the Seahawks. It was two kills by Haley Von Harten and another by Brooke Paulsen that sealed a 2-1 lead for the Panthers.

“We started to make errors,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. “We were missing serves and making errors. Our serve-receive and missed serves came when we had our youngest players on the floor. That’s what young players do. Usually they can work through it, but we didn’t work through it tonight.”

The deciding fourth game got away from the Seahawks just as they were making a run at retaking the momentum. Andrea Steidl, Sydney Nowak and Taylor Lydy delivered kills down the stretch to nail down the victory.

Von Harten led the Panthers with eight kills with Steidl adding seven. Nowak contributed four aces and setter Samantha Damico had 22 assists.

Kristi Maselter and Alison Harper both had nine kills and Alysia Figueroa three. Maselter also blocked nine shots to go with six aces. Katie Upton had three aces to go with 20 assists.
