Blades hit road for three games
The Florida Everblades suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night at Germain Arena, a 2-1 defeat in a penalty shootout.
The loss gave the Everblades (1-0-1) a split of their season-opening series against their division rival Gwinnett Gladiators.
Blades goaltender John Muse was solid in the net, holding the Gladiators scoreless over the final two periods to send the game into the overtime shootout. Muse stopped 34 of 35 shots he faced in regulation time. Neither team scored in the first six rounds of penalty shots.
Both teams scored in the seventh round and traded opportunities for four more rounds until Gwinnett’s Tyler Murovich ended the game with a goal in the 11th round.
Gwinnett ended a seven-game losing streak to the Everblades dating back to last season.
The Everblades won the opening game 3-2 on Friday. The win boosted the Everblades to 10-3-1 all-time in season-opening games, winning their last five openers in a row. They are 7-2-0 in home openers.
The Blades leave town Thursday for a three-game, three-day road trip. They play at Elmira Friday, at Trenton Saturday and at Reading Sunday.
The Blades play a total of nine straight games on the road and do not play at home again until Nov. 9 when they host the Wheeling Nailers.
