November’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

ADULTS

Iris Folding Cards

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 1

Monika Heutmann, an East County Library favorite crafter, returns to teach this easy and lovely craft. Create beautiful cards for your family and friends using a paper-folding technique called Iris folding. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Book Discussion: Eric Felten’s “Loyalty: The Vexing Virtue”

3:30 p.m. Monday, November 7

We’ll discuss the seemingly simple topic of loyalty that is covered, from ancient times to present, in this interesting book. The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.

English Caf

6 p.m. Mondays, November 7, 14, 21, 28

10 a.m. Fridays, November 4, 18

Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.

Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Mondays, November 7, 14, 21, 28

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome! Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

Sewn Card Making

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 8

Monika Heutmann, continues her craft series with an old favorite – stitching cards. This method produces lovely results and is great for beginners! Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Making Paper Holiday Ornaments

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 15

Join Monika Heutmann for more paper crafts. She will have several styles of ornaments for you to make. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Holocaust-Era Boxcar Display

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida’s HolocaustEra Boxcar, a rare artifact, is an invaluable and mobile education tool utilized to promote tolerance by teaching the history and lessons of the Holocaust.

Poetry Room

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 22

Poetry Lovers Unite! Join other like-minded people to talk about poetry and share what it means to you. Bring your favorite poem and listen to the poetry of others in a friendly, receptive environment. Registration is required.

Making Paper Stars

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 22

Monika Heutmann will show you how to make beautiful three-dimensional paper stars. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Erika’s Story

Presented by The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida’s Amy Snyder

2 p.m. Saturday, November 26

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida’s Education Director, Amy Snyder, will present Erika’s Story. This true story features Erika who, as a blanket-wrapped infant, was thrown from a cattle car bound for a concentration camp in 1944 and a German woman risks her life to raise her. The narrative is appropriate for families with children in grades 4 and up. Registration is required.

Historic Overview of the Holocaust-Era Boxcar

2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 26

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida’s Education Director Amy Snyder will present an overview of the history of the Holocaust-Era Boxcar for all age groups. Registration is requested.

Making Beaded Christmas Ornaments

6 p.m. Tuesday, November 29

Monika Heutmann completes her craft series with beautiful, beaded Christmas ornaments. Don’t miss this one! Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

FAMILY

Family Storytime

6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, November 1, 8, 15, 29

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Wednesdays, November 2, 9, 16, 30

10 a.m. Thursdays, November 3, 10, 17

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10:30 a.m. Monday, November 14

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, November 2, 9, 16, 30

10:30 a.m. Thursdays, November 3, 10, 17

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.

Kids Read Down Fines

3 4 p.m. Saturday, November 5

4:30 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 16

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.

A Day at the Races

2 p.m. Saturday, November 12

Come celebrate National Gaming Day and test your agility and skills at a variety of games.

Books ‘n Bricks

3:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 23

Kids, listen to a story and then use our supply of interlocking bricks (and your imagination) to bring its theme to life. Photos of your creations will be put on display for all to enjoy! Registration is required.

TEENS

East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 1

Join a group of teens with an interest in Anime, Manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Visit the East County Regional Library and play Nintendo Wii’s Just Dance 2! Dance to your favorite songs, competing individually, or form a crew of friends and have a dance off. Over 40 hit songs to choose from! Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

All events and educational opportunities offered through the East County Regional Library are free and open to the public.

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida’s Education Director Amy Snyder will present an overview of the history of the Holocaust-Era Boxcar for all age groups. Registration is requested.
