No children hurt in school bus crash early Monday
None of the 36 elementary aged school students on a school bus that was involved in a collision Monday morning, Oct. 31, at the intersection of Bell and Milwaukee boulevards in Lehigh Acres was injured after a driver of a 2003 Ford is accused of running a stop sign at the Bell and Milwaukee boulevards intersection. He was identified as Refugio A Lopez, 73, of Lehigh.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Rachel Gayle, 35 of Lehigh Acres was driving a school bus when the Lopez car failed to stop at a stop sign.
Police said the bus was stopped, westbound on Milwaukee Blvd, pulling out to continue straight. The Lopez car failed to stop at the stop sight, striking the rear left side of the bus behind the wheel area.
Trooper Joseph Bowers said the Lopez vehicle ended up in the eastbound lane of Bell Blvd. S., blocking the road for around an hour and a half.
The school bus with 36 students were transported to school on another bus. The principal responded to the scene and no children needed to be taken to a hospital..
Bowers said Lopez was charged with failure to come to a halt at a posted stop sign and was charged for the violation.
