Legion Auxiliary to hold Poppy Days Nov 4, 5

By Staff | Nov 1, 2011

The American Legion Auxiliary 323 will hold its annual Poppy Days, November 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The members of Auxiliary, Post, Squadron and Riders will be in front of many stores in Lehigh Acres, seeking donations for poppies. The money is used only for helping veterans and their families.

“We donate to all VA facilities in Florida including the satellite offices, such as the Fort Myers VA Clinic. We also donate to the All Children’s Hospital, and other facilities with the donations received,” said Jerry Sherlock, Post commander.

The poppies grew in profusion in Flanders in the disturbed earth of the battlefields and cemeteries where war casualties were buried. The poem “In Flanders Field” was written after John McCrae witnessed the death and presided over the funeral of a friend, in World War I. Later the poppy became the flower of the American Legion.

The Auxiliary will plant the yard beside the Post with poppies and crosses. It will be available to see from November 4-13, at the Post Home at 1124 Ashlar Ave.

The Auxiliary needs volunteers to sign up for its street distribution. A signup sheet is at the Post.

That evening the Auxiliary will have a prime rib dinner for $11 or beer battered shrimp for $8, including baked potato, vegetable, roll, and butter. All dinners are open to public, Alcoholic beverages served to members and guests only.
