Major heroin ring busted in Lee County; 18 are arrested, four remain at-large

Alexander Santiago-Cpra
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 18 people today in what officials are calling a major crackdown on illegal drugs. The operation is being called Operation Smack Down. Of the 18, three are from Lehigh Acres.
According to Lt. Larry King, who heads the public information department at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the Narcotics Unit began a series of arrest culminating a year-long investigation into a large heroin trafficking organization operating in Lee County.
King said that an increase in the availability of heroin to local users was detected and prompted what he called a dedicated effort.
Members of the illegal trafficking organization were systematically identified and undercover buys were made from “Trap Houses” locations used by dealers to disperse narcotics to a given area set up by the group.
King that said some 22 suspects face charges ranging from sale and possession of heroin to heroin trafficking.
