East County Regional Library announces upcoming activities
The roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
Adults
* Book Discussion – Walter Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs”: 3:30 p.m. April 2
Steve Job’s roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality will be the subject of a lively discussion. This creative entrepreneur who was known for his passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.
* English Caf: 6 p.m. April 16, 23 and 30, and 10 a.m. April 20 and 27
Practice your English with English Cafe, a free, conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Participants may start at any time. Advanced registration is not necessary.
* Poetry Room: 6 p.m. April 17
Poetry Lovers Unite. Join other like-minded people to talk about poetry and share what it means to you. Bring your favorite poem and listen to the poetry of others in a friendly, receptive environment. Registration is required.
Family
* Family Storytime: 6:30 p.m. April 3, 10, 17 and 24
This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.
* Toddler Storytime: 10 a.m. April 4, 11, 18 and 25, and 10 a.m. April 5, 12, 19 and 26
Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.
* Baby-Parent Rhyme Time: 10:30 a.m. April 21 and 10:30 a.m. April 23
Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby. These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.
Children
* Preschool Storytime: 10:30 a.m. April 4, 11, 18 and 25, and 10:30 a.m. April 5, 12, 19 and 26
Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.
* Kids Read Down Fines: 4:30-5:30 p.m. April 4, 11, 18 and 25, and 3-4 p.m. April 28
Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and younger. Coupons may be applied to card issued to patrons age 18 and under only. Registration is required.
* Earth Day for Kids: 2 p.m. April 21
Celebrate Earth Day (a day early) with stories and an earth-friendly craft.
Teens
* Celebrate National Poetry Month: April 2-30
During normal operating hours, which are Monday-Wednesday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Friday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Celebrate National Poetry Month at the East County Regional Library. Bring in your own works of poetry (or your favorite poems) to be included in a library display, create group works of poetry by playing Exquisite Corpse, and peruse library shelves to create Book Spine Poetry.
* East County Anime Club: 4:30 p.m. April 3
Join a group of teens with an interest in Anime, Manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.
* Kids Read Down Fines: 4:30-5:30 p.m. April 4, 11, 18 and 25, and 3-4 p.m. April 28

* Wii Play Wii Dance: 4:30 p.m. April 10 and 24
Visit the East County Regional Library and play Nintendo Wii. Play your favorite Wii games. Dance to your favorite songs. Game choice will vary from program to program. Snacks will be provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.
* Pizza and Books: 3 p.m. April 18
Stop by with a favorite book, or one that you have recently read. Share what you liked, or disliked, with others. Pizza provided by the Friend’s of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required so we know how much pizza to order.
* Poetry Slam: 4:30 p.m. April 25
Celebrate National Poetry Month and join us for a Teen Poetry Slam. Perform works of poetry in a competition judged by audience members. Bring your own words to life, or those of your favorite poet, and experience the thrill of moving an audience. Registration is required.
* Monster Mikes: 3 p.m. April 30
Calling all teen rappers to the East County Regional Library. Bring your lyrics, bring your beats and share your songs and freestyles with others.
Snacks provided by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is requested.
