Local students qualify in Duke’s Talent Identification Program
Duke University has released the results of its 2011-12 Academic Talent Search, known as the Talent Identification Program, or TIP. Duke conducts the program, which seeks to identify academically talented middle school students, in a 16-state area.
One aspect of TIP is giving middle school students the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT tests that are normally for advanced high school students. This year, 218 seventh-graders across the county took the SAT or ACT test, up from 194 last year.
The results of the testing showed the following:
– 75 students qualified for state recognition
– Five students qualified for grand recognition
– 54 students qualified for academy for summer studies;
– 31 students qualified for center for summer studies
Some of the 2011-12 students included:

– Christopher Lather Jr., of Varsity Lakes
– Dalyce Farnan, of Veterans Park Academy
– Logan Nott, of Veterans Park Academy
– Molly Nystedt, of Veterans Park Academy
– Madison Rayburn, of Veterans Park Academy
Lehigh Senior High to host 5K ‘Run to College Race Walk’
Lehigh Senior High School Center for the Arts is hosting the First Annual Advancement Via Individual Determination 5K “Run to College Race Walk” on April 28 at 8:30 a.m. at Lehigh Senior High School, at 901 Gunnery Road. Registration starts 7:30 a.m.
The purpose of the 5K is to raise funds for the school’s program. Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, is a program for first-generation college-bound students.
Funds will be used for college trips, tutoring, supplies and other AVID needs. In addition, Keiser University will provide a scholarship to one Lehigh Senior High AVID student.
Those individuals interested in participating should contact Monica Walker, Lehigh Senior High’s AVID coordinator, at 693-5353. Lehigh Senior High was the first AVID school in Lee County.
