Two found dead in Lehigh home; search is on for ‘man of interest’
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is looking for Steven Tompkins, 24, who is wanted for questioning in the deaths of his mother and a brother on Dec. 10 at their home at 1919 Jefferson St.
Lt. Larry King, a spokesman with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, said he was being considered as “a person of interest.” He may be armed with a handgun and traveling in a 2004, green, four-door, Ford F-150 Lariat pickup truck with a Florida license tag of BFK T59, King said.
He is described as five feet, five inches tall, of medium build with hazel eyes and short brown hair. However, King said he may also have facial hair.
On Dec. 10 shortly before 7 p.m., a 911 operator received a call concerning two adults who were found dead at the 1919 Jefferson Ave. address in Lehigh.
Autopsies performed later confirmed the identities of the adults as 55-year-old Shelly Tompkins and 22-year-old Daniel Tompkins. Shelly is the mother of Daniel and Steven.
King said that upon entry into the home, deputies made what he called a “grisly discovery” of the two dead people.
Detectives looking for Steven Tompkins have asked the public to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office if they know his whereabouts. The number to call is 239-477-1000 or, to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward, call Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).
King said information can also be given online at www.swflcrimestoppers.org or via text to CRIMES (274637). The keyword is REWARD, or through the TipSubmit app on any smart phone.
King said the weapon used in the killing was not being disclosed at this time.
An investigation is continuing, King said. He was unable to provide any more information about the incident.
After the 1919 Jefferson Ave. site had become a crime scene, it was impossible for anyone to drive up the street, which is located in an isolated area known by some as “Little Alva.” The street is located just at the area where Joel Boulevard becomes a two-laned highway.
