4 local students honored at ‘Do The Right Thing’

By Staff | Dec 18, 2013

Twenty-three students in Lee County school were honored on Dec. 12 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in its “Do The Right Thing” program.

Students are nominated by teachers and resource officers for outstanding things they have done in the school and each month the Sheriff’s Office holds a ceremony in the downtown Board of Education Office to honor them. Students come from several of the schools throughout the county.

Four students in the East Zone of Lehigh Acres and Alva honored in the ceremony included:

– Reagan Adams, of Lehigh Acres, is a third-grader at The Alva School.

Teacher Erica Smith wrote, “Another student was having a bad day and did not want to come to school. Some teachers were talking to this particular student when Reagan walked by and overheard the conversation. Reagan stopped and asked the child if he would allow her to walk him to class. He agreed, and while walking together, Reagan engaged him in conversation and told him that everything was going to be all right. The gesture of compassion, understanding and concern was so heartfelt and sincere. Reagan did all this without anyone asking her to, because she knew it was the right thing to do.”

– Melissa Gamero, of Fort Myers, is a sixth-grader at The Alva School.

Teacher Roberta Barnsdale wrote, “A student had purchased a ticket for the back-to-school dance and proceeded to lose it during lunch time. This student exhibited sadness at having lost the ticket, and not being able to go to the dance. Melissa became aware of the incident and this student’s grieving the loss. She made a decision and voluntarily gave this student her ticket so that the student in question could go to the dance. Melissa exhibited a keen awareness of a person who was hurting. Her actions also exhibited kindness, caring and unselfishness.”

– Briana Gonzale, of Lehigh Acres, is a seventh-grader at Lehigh Acres Middle School.

School Resource Officer Deputy Jevon Matthews wrote, “One of our teachers at Lehigh Acres Middle School slipped and fell in her neighborhood. Briana, who is one of this teacher’s students, also lives in that same neighborhood. Briana observed the teacher falling down and immediately rushed to the teacher’s aide. Briana was able to go into her own home, summon help and quickly return to the injured teacher. Briana also protected the teacher from any further injury as she had fallen in the middle of the street. Briana provided comfort until help arrived. For Briana’s actions she deserves to be recognized by the Do The Right Thing Program.”

– Triston Xavier Sanchez, of Lehigh Acres, is a seventh-grader at Lehigh Acres Middle School.

School Resource Officer Jevon Matthews wrote, “Triston witnessed a very traumatic incident. After the incident was over Triston remained calm and was able to console his mother and younger brother who were also at the scene. His mother and younger brother were visibly shaken by the incident. Triston’s actions showed maturity after a stressful incident and should be rewarded for his actions.”
