Race in the Park: New event opens up Spring Festival

For the first time in years, the 5K race in Lehigh Acres that begins early on the first day of the Lehigh Spring Festival, will be held in a different site and if you have not signed up, there is still time to make the big run sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres and Lehigh Regional Medical Center.

Earl Hart has been director of the run for – at his own guess – 33 years or more. He said proceeds from the early morning run help Lehigh. The proceeds this year will support Rotary Kid’s Night Baseball, East Lee County High School’s JROTC, Track and Cross Country teams.

“This year we’re going to start the 5K run at the parking lot at Veterans Park. That is a vast difference as in past years, we ran a race throughout Lehigh,” Hart said.

Race date is Saturday, March 15 at 8 a.m. at Veterans Park on Homestead Rd. You can pre-register online at: www.ftmyerstrackclub.com. Race day registration will be open from 7 until 7:45 a.m.

Hart said those who still want to participate may make checks payable to The Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres and mail them to 1152 Cherokee Ave., Lehigh Acres, FL. 33936.

Age groups include adults with a pre-registration fee of $20 which ends March 14. On Race Day registration is $25. Youth, including youngsters 18 years of age and under have a pre-registration fee of $10 and it also ends March 14. On race day, the youth registration is $15.

Awards will be presented to male and female overall, male and female masters, male and female grandmasters and male and females senior grandmasters.

The race is open to anyone in Southwest Florida who likes to run for a cause.

Hart said there is an official entry form that must be signed.
