At 1:10 p.m. April 28, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a head-on crash at the intersection of Plantation Road and Arc Way.

The complainant stated that two vehicles had struck each other head on, and that the driver of one of the vehicles was possibly dead.

The preliminary information revealed that a Ryder box truck, driven by Nelson Garcia Rodriguez, 44, of 3407 S.W. 15th St., was traveling northbound on Plantation Road.

As the box truck approach Arc, the driver of a Dodge 1500 pick up that was traveling eastbound on Arc failed to stop at the intersection. The driver was Barrett Whitney Thompson, 49, of 6073 Macbeth Lane, Fort Myers.

Thompson attempted to make a right turn onto Plantation from Arc and entered into the path of the Ryder truck. Rodriguez was unsuccessful at evading the crash and struck the Dodge head on.

After impact, the Dodge rotated clockwise coming to rest facing west bound on Plantation. The Ryder truck jackknifed and exited the roadway onto the shoulder of the roadway.

Thompson was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Rodriguez was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash and the investigation is on going, according to officials.
