Little time left to sign up for backpacks

By Staff | Jun 11, 2014

Parents and their children who are qualified to receive a free backpack and other school supplies from Lehigh Community Services shouldn’t wait too long.

The first day to register to receive free school supplies was last week, but according to Rae Nicely, few parents showed up to register despite the publicity that was printed in the community.

Now, Nicely says, they are extending the registration period to June 20. Families who are qualified must show up at 201 Plaza Drive at Lehigh Community Services with report cards and photo IDs in order to receive the backpacks and supplies for school which begins in August.

“Usually we are slammed on the first day of registration, but we were not this time,” Nicely said.

“We want to emphasize that the students’ report cards and photo IDs must be brought to Lehigh Community Services to sign up,” Nicely said. “I know this is a first time requirement. It has nothing to do with the students’ grades, but because the guidelines have changed, the report cards of each child must be brought to us along with some type of photo ID,” Nicely said. “Without those two things, the children won’t be eligible for a free backpack and school supplies.”

“After they have signed up, we will call them to let them know the date of distribution which includes backpacks and school supplies plus some other items,” she said.

Lehigh Community Services also began one of two mobile food pantries for the summer.

“The first one was June 4 at New Life Assembly Church parking lot and those who come had to be pre-registered.

“The next one is Wednesday, Aug. 6. Registration begins July 21. Mark it on your calendar.

“This is an opportunity for clients to get lots of food in a short time frame,” Nicely said.
